Local SEO Checklist for SC Upstate Small Businesses

A practical, do-it-this-weekend Local SEO checklist for small business owners in Spartanburg, Greenville, and the SC Upstate. Most of these are free.

Step 1 — Claim your Google Business Profile

Visit business.google.com and search for your business. If it's already listed (it usually is), claim it. If not, create it. Verify ownership — usually by postcard or phone.

Step 2 — Fill in EVERY field

Most Upstate businesses leave Google Business Profile half-empty. Don't. Fill in:

  • Full business name (exactly as on signage)
  • Categories (primary + 3-4 secondary)
  • Full address, hours, special hours
  • Phone and website
  • Services or menu
  • 10+ high-quality photos
  • Business description with city name

Step 3 — Post weekly to Google Business Profile

Posts work like Instagram updates but for Google. Post specials, new menu items, hours changes, photos. Google rewards businesses that post regularly with better Map Pack visibility.

Step 4 — Get on directories (citations)

Google checks if your Name/Address/Phone (NAP) is consistent across the web. Set up listings on:

  • Yelp
  • Apple Maps (Apple Business Connect)
  • Bing Places
  • Yellow Pages
  • Industry directories (TripAdvisor, OpenTable, Vagaro, etc.)
  • Local chambers of commerce (Spartanburg Chamber, Greenville Chamber)

Use the exact same NAP everywhere. Inconsistencies hurt rankings.

Step 5 — Get reviews. Constantly.

This is the single biggest Map Pack ranking factor. After every customer, ask for a review. Make it easy — text them a direct link to your Google review page. Set a goal: 5 new reviews per month minimum.

Step 6 — Respond to every review

Reply to every review — positive and negative — within 48 hours. Google sees this as engagement. Customers see it as professionalism.

Step 7 — On-page SEO on your website

Make sure your website has:

  • Title tags that include your city ("Italian Restaurant in Spartanburg, SC")
  • Meta descriptions written for humans
  • Headings (H1, H2) that include local keywords naturally
  • An address + map embedded on your contact page
  • LocalBusiness schema markup
  • Fast page speed (under 3 seconds on mobile)

Step 8 — Build local backlinks

Links from other local SC websites (chambers, community blogs, partner businesses) signal local relevance to Google. Sponsor a local event. Partner with neighbors. Get listed on SC Upstate directories.

Step 9 — Be patient. Then be patient again.

Local SEO is compounding. You won't rank overnight. Most small businesses see significant improvement in 60-90 days of consistent work. Skip steps and the timeline doubles.
