Google Business Profile Setup Guide for Local Businesses

The single biggest local ranking lever is completely free — and most Upstate businesses have it half-finished or unclaimed. Here's the complete setup, step by step, in under an hour.

Why this matters more than your website

When someone in Spartanburg or Greenville searches "pizza near me" or "salon open now," Google shows the Map Pack first — three local businesses with reviews, photos, hours, and a call button. Most customers never scroll past it. The Map Pack is powered almost entirely by your Google Business Profile, not your website. Free to claim, free to optimize, and most of your competitors have done it badly.

Step 1 — Claim (or create) your profile

Go to business.google.com and search for your business name. If it appears, claim it. If not, create it. Google verifies ownership by postcard, phone, email, or video — do it immediately; an unverified profile barely ranks.

Step 2 — Nail the business name (no keyword stuffing)

Use your real-world name exactly as it appears on your signage. Adding keywords ("Tony's Pizza — Best Pizza Spartanburg Delivery") violates Google's rules and can get the listing suspended. The ranking boost isn't worth losing the profile.

Step 3 — Pick categories carefully

Your primary category is the strongest ranking signal on the profile. Be specific: "Pizza restaurant" beats "Restaurant." Then add 3–5 secondary categories that genuinely apply (e.g. "Italian restaurant," "Takeout restaurant," "Caterer"). Don't add categories you don't actually serve.

Step 4 — Fill in every single field

  • Address (or service area, if you work from home)
  • Hours — including holiday hours; "hours might differ" warnings scare customers off
  • Phone number and website link
  • Services or menu, with prices where possible
  • Business description — 750 characters, mention your city naturally
  • Attributes: outdoor seating, wheelchair access, Wi-Fi, whatever applies

Google measures completeness. A 100% complete profile beats a half-finished one, all else equal.

Step 5 — Add 10+ real photos (then keep adding)

Profiles with photos get far more calls and direction requests. Upload the storefront (so people recognize it from the street), the interior, your team, and your best products or dishes. Phone photos are fine — recent and real beats polished and stale. Add a couple of new ones every month.

Step 6 — Get reviews on a system, not by luck

Reviews are the #1 Map Pack ranking factor — and the #1 thing customers read. Get your direct review link (Profile → "Ask for reviews") and build a habit: text it to every happy customer, print a QR code for the counter, ask at the moment they compliment you. Five new reviews a month compounds fast.

Step 7 — Respond to every review

Positive or negative, reply within 48 hours. Google reads responsiveness as engagement; customers read it as professionalism. For negative reviews: stay calm, own what's real, offer to fix it offline. Future customers judge you by the reply, not the complaint.

Step 8 — Post weekly

Google Posts work like a mini social feed on your profile — specials, events, new products, seasonal hours. Weekly posting keeps the profile "fresh," and freshness is a ranking input. It's five minutes a week.

Step 9 — Check the Insights tab monthly

Your profile shows exactly how customers find you: what they searched, whether they called, requested directions, or clicked the site. That's free market research — use it to see which photos and posts actually drive calls.

The one-hour version

  • Claim + verify the profile (15 min)
  • Complete every field, correct primary category (20 min)
  • Upload 10 photos (10 min)
  • Get your review link + text it to 5 happy customers (10 min)
  • Publish your first post (5 min)
